Opera Queensland - Under the Stars

Opera Queensland Launches its 40th season with a celebration of music and singing under the stars

Opera Queensland is set to launch its 40th Birthday season with a joyous celebration of family, friends and song. Opera Queensland Under the Stars takes centre stage at Brisbane Riverstage on Saturday 28 November 2020.

As the sun sets on 2020, Opera Queensland will turn the spotlight on some of the state’s most talented opera singers, performing with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO), 60 voices of the Opera Queensland Chorus and a choir of school students, in a special, one off event.

Opera Queensland Under the Stars is set to be a dazzling launch for Opera Queensland’s much anticipated 2021 season and a kickstart to celebrations for its 40th anniversary next year.

Audiences are invited to bring a blanket and join their family and friends for an alfresco evening of music and singing with COVID safe seating in socially distanced pods of up to four people.

Ten of Queensland’s most outstanding singers are set to shine on the Brisbane Riverstage, including: Eva Kong, Jose Carbo, Kang Wang, Hayley Sugars, Jason Barry-Smith, Sofia Troncoso, Xenia Puskarz-Thomas, and Sam Piper.

Music from some of the most popular and adored operas will ring into the night with an 70-strong Queensland Symphony Orchestra performing under the baton of Dane Lam.

Audience members new to opera will be enchanted by a popular program of songs including Mozart’s Letter Duet, made famous in The Shawshank Redemption and the Brindisi, or the Drinking Song, from Verdi’s La traviata.

A 60 voice Opera Queensland Chorus will share the stage, with the other artists. Performing together for the first time in 2020, there is no doubt they will create a sound that has to be seen (and heard) to be believed.

The concert also includes an encore performance of Songs of Belonging, a song by Queensland composer Helen Franzmann  created with students from Yeronga State High School and Opera Queensland.

The culturally diverse students’ stories of identity and belonging combined to create a song celebrating the many rich and varied communities that call Queensland home.

Rounding out Opera Queensland Under the Stars’ packed program is a special guest performance from one of Australia’s most acclaimed musicians who will be revealed closer
to the concert.

Opera Queensland - Don Giovanni.

Look into the eyes of one of opera’s most tortured souls as Don Giovanni roams the stage.

The genius of Mozart, for too long overdue in OperaQ’s repertoire, returns with his epic and timeless masterpiece Don Giovanni, conducted by Johannes Fritzsch.

In Lindy Hume’s bold, visually arresting new staging the aristocratic Don Giovanni is a seductive sociopath, cajoling, funny and charming, yet dangerous and destructive. Giovanni’s descent into hell is one of theatre’s most spectacular scenes, but no work of Mozart’s is one-dimensional, so be prepared to experience a kaleidoscope of emotions across the sweep of one of opera’s most exhilarating scores.

Opera Australia - Aida.

This is a story of love so strong it defies enemy lines. This is a story of a kingdom in triumph and a nation in chains.

This is a story of betrayal.

Verdi’s monumental, transcendent music makes this historic epic a perennial favourite. Our new production comes from the celebrated Italian director Davide Livermore.

He is renowned for high-tech sets so tangible, it’s hard to believe they are just light and shadow. Immersive, impressive, intimate — this is the future of spectacle on stage.

Thrilling young conductor Andrea Battistoni returns to lead this production. Three magnificent casts perform Verdi’s difficult leads. You don’t want to miss the stunning soprano of Amber Wagner, paired with Elena Gabouri as Amneris and Riccardo Massi as Radamès.

Later in the season, rising star Natalie Aroyan takes on her dream role, and Clémentine Margaine, Milijana Nikolic, Diego Torre and Yonghoon Lee join the all-star lineup.

Pinchgut Opera - Athalia.

  • Google Calendar ICS

The first great English oratorio

A poet of the human heart through music, Handel’s brilliance at examining human nature is in full flight with Athalia. He presents characters rich in thought and feeling, combined with some simply stunning choruses that will knock your socks off. Then there are heart-stopping moments when everything clears but for a few strings and a single voice. It’s just magic. In the sure hands of Cantillation – an ensemble of voices with the speed, agility and flexibility of a chamber orchestra – Athalia will be Pinchgut Opera at its very best.

The powerful plot comes alive in a hotbed of intrigue and devious characters. The murderous, idol-worshipping Queen Athalia is intent on eradicating the line of David. But one has escaped the slaughter: the child Joas has been raised in secret by Josabeth, the wife of the high priest Joad. Can Athalia succeed in her dreadful purpose that all heirs to the throne are to be destroyed?
